Legislative Update

The first big legislative deadline is this Thursday, March 5th. All bills must make it out of committee by Thursday to “stay alive” for this session. This Legislative Tracking Spreadsheet lists several education bills. Ones highlighted orange have passed committee. As bills are heard on the Senate or House floor, we will update the spreadsheet: red highlights will be if the bill does not pass, and yellow if the bill does pass. All bills that pass the floor will be assigned to a committee in the opposite chamber.
The biggest news in education legislation last week was the Senate Republicans’ press conference on their plan to fund a teacher pay raise ($2,500) and several education priorities “without new spending.” Details of their plan can be found here; their plan is to cap the Oklahoma Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS) at $200 million and use the funding beyond that amount to fund the raises and other educational priorities, including SB 1360. This plan also includes expanding the Parent Choice Tax Credit. This funding plan is not tied to a specific bill and conversations about the budget tend to happen later in the session after the other legislative deadlines have been met. However, If you have opinions on this funding plan you can (and should) reach out to your legislators!
We will be closely watching legislation this week to see which bills make it out of committee. If you feel strongly about a piece of legislation that has not yet passed a committee, this is the time to reach out to your legislator and let them know your thoughts! If you aren’t sure who your legislators are, click here! You can contact legislators both for your home address and your school/work address.
